The Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, also known as SPLIA, is a non-profit group which works to preserve Long Island's cultural heritage and historic environments.

Howard Sherwood founded SPLIA in 1948. Its mission was the preservation of historic structures and artifacts. Long Island had a population of 840,000 then and was feeling the stresses of post war development. During the 1950s and 60s, the Society focused on saving historic buildings by turning them into historic house museums.

Over the last five decades SPLIA has emerged as the regional advocate for preservation issues concerning Long Island.

SPLIA keeps us in touch with our past in a variety of ways including publications, exhibits, historic house museums, collections and innovative educational programming. The society holds a number of events including annual Apple Festivals, Country House Lectures, Gallery Exhibits, workshops and reenactments.

SPLIA relies on an active and involved membership to accomplish its goals. Society members enjoy invitations to special exhibits and events, free admission to all its house museums, discounts at our museum store, as well as newsletters and the periodical, PRESERVATION NOTES.
