IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS “Colonial Day” SPLIA can develop a custom, full-day colonial program for children ages 7+; the program incorporates the following hands-on learning activities: Program One: SPLIA educators demonstrate and explain the importance of colonial crafts done at home as students try their hand at sewing (cross-stitching or quilting), and tin lantern making. Students will also experience first-hand the costumes and artifacts of 18th century New York. Program Two: Includes Program One, plus students will build their own mortise and tenon house frame and visit with a colonial doctor. Learn how common illnesses (such as toothaches) were treated and see the actual tools/artifacts of the doctor! Program Three: Includes Programs One & Two, plus Ropesmiths demonstrate and discuss the history of cordage in early America and students create their own cordage sample. Program Four: Includes Programs One and Two, plus colonial balladeer Linda Russell entertains students with anthems, ballads, and dance tunes from early America and the American Revolution. Linda has a collection of historic instruments, such as the dulcimer, and students will be encouraged to participate! “The Slave Experience in New York” This in-school program explores the African-American slave experience through the following activities:
