A Country House Lecture
by David Garrard Lowe

The author who is considered one of the world's leading authorities on architectural history and social criticism.
"How different this house was! How different the impulse that led to its construction. It stood not as one of a row, but boldly alone, not as an expression of conformity, but as a proclamation of individualism. It was an outward and visible sign of the success of booming American capitalism and trumpeted the fact that this country could design and construct a dwelling equal to anything in London's Belgravia or on Paris's Avenue du Bois.
New York had seen nothing like it..."

SPLIA COUNTRY HOUSE LECTURE SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2010-THE ARCHITECTURE OF GROSVENOR ATTERBURY
posted on: 0000-00-00

Grace Auditorium at Cold Spring Harbor Lab, 25A, 3PM
In the final decade of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the United States experienced exponential growth and a flourishing economy, and with it, a building boom. Grosvenor Atterbury (1869-1956) produced more than one hundred major projects, including an array of grand country houses, picturesque estates, informal summer cottages, and farm groups. There were also a number of Long Island projects including Cold Spring Harbor's Wawapek Farm, Bayberry Point and Scully Place in Islip. However, it was his role as a town planner and civic leader and his work to create model tenements, hospitals, workers’ housing, and town plans for which he is most celebrated. His Forest Hills Gardens, designed in association with the Olmsted Brothers, is lauded as one of the most highly significant community planning projects of its time.

Authors Peter Pennoyer and Anne Walker will present an illustrated lecture on their new book The Architecture of Grosvenor Atterbury at Grace Auditorium at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Route 25A, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 3p.m. Reservations suggested as seating is limited. Fee: $10

ON EXHIBIT NOW THROUGH DECEMBER 12TH: ROMANTIC LONG ISLAND; 19TH CENTURY IMAGES
posted on: 0000-00-00

An exhibit organized from the collection of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities by Robert B. MacKay, Director of the Society, in consultation with Franklin Hill Perrell, former Curator of the Nassau County Fine Arts Museum.

Description: As Romanticism manifested itself in America in the middle decades of the 19th century, Long Island "the garden of the middle colonies" became a source of artistic inspiration for the movement's embrace of nature and the picturesque. Our agrarian traditions, virgin landscapes and rural idealism provided a wealth of subjects for artists who sought aesthetic dimensions. Nostalgia for simpler times, the movement's antidote for a rapidly industrializing America, is particularly seen in the Currier & Ives views included in the exhibit. Many are by Fanny Palmer (1812-1876) the graphic artist who Nathanial Currier frequently sent out to Long Island in his carriage to sketch first hand. Recording genre scenes, set in nature's panoply, are paintings and drawings by William S. Mount (1807 - 1868), his younger contemporary William Davis (1829 -1920) and the German emigre artist Edward Lange whose highly detailed depictions of country seats and their landscape gardens also expressed the age's aesthetic for the picturesque. Romanticism in America also shared in the idealism and developed apace with the emergence of national identity, hence, the exhibit also includes works awash in the metaphors of nationalism such as James Bard's (1815-1897) flag festooned depiction of Steamboat Seawanhaka, a lithograph of Sag Harbor's Suffolk Guard and an eagle embossed Civil War drum manufactured by A. Rogers of Flushing. Comprised of a variety of artistic mediums and featuring many works never before exhibited by SPLIA.

The SPLIA Gallery is located in Cold Spring Harbor at the corner of Route 25A and Shore Road (across from the fire house)
Open Friday through Sunday, 11am-5pm. (Admission $1).

TEARDOWNS AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIP/FREE PRESERVATION WORKSHOPS FOR LOCAL BOARDS MAY 15 AND JUNE 5 -
posted on: 0000-00-00

A look at innovative and lucrative zoning strategies designed to prevent excessive land development.
Many towns and villages on Long Island are experiencing high numbers of teardowns. Demolition applications
are increasing as land values escalate. Economic hardship criteria are utilized as one of many arguments supporting
the demolition of historic structures, and the difficulty in defining the extent of “hardship” appears to
contribute to the rate of teardowns in our historic districts. An examination of these issues and a look at innovative
zoning strategies designed to prevent excessive land development will assist members of local architectural
and historic review boards in their application approval process.
The Village of Southampton, with nearly 500 designated resources in four historic districts, provides an ideal
case study for the impact of teardowns and the difficulties of evaluating economic hardship applications. Workshop
participants will have the opportunity to share their issues, questions and concerns with the guest speakers
and with local preservationists.
Each workshop is provided free of charge through funding by the Certified Local Government program of the
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Lunch is included in this program.

VICTORIAN ROSLYN; A SUCCESSION OF STYLES, WALKING TOUR LED BY FRANKLIN HILL PERRELL SAT./OCT. 22,/2PM-4PM/MEET AT BRYANT LIBRARY AT 2 PAPER MILL RD.
posted on: 0000-00-00

The essence of the Victorian Era was revival: Gothic, Greek, Italianate, Empire, et al. These styles are represented in more than 30 pre-Civil War houses surrounding Roslyn's scenic ponds, many protected by covenants held by the Roslyn Landmark Society since Peggy and Roger Gerry began the drive to save them half a century ago. Today, Roslyn may well look better than it did 100 years ago. The Society continues, among its many projects, restoring the Jerusha Dewey Cottage (a unique compendium of Victorian motifs, built by Bryant and occupied by the Fricks) and the elegant Milliken Trellis, the monumental focal point in the formal Gardens designed by Marian Cruger Coffin which survive from the original estate (now Bryant Preserve/NCMA). The tour will be followed by tea and cookies at Diane's Bakery (under the viaduct).
