Gantry Plaza State Park. NYSOPR&HP

What is a gantry? A gantry is a bridge-like frame over which a traveling crane moves. These cranes were used to load and unload cargo ships while in port. Seen at right is a photograph of the 2- 1/2 acre park showing the historic gantries on the East River in Queens at the terminus of 48th Avenue. This park is planned for community usefor festivals and exhibits at the northern end and passive recreation, a fishing pier, and children’s playground at the southern end, with signage to remind the visitor of the historic industrial use of the waterfront.
