Floyd Bennett Field
The National Park Service Gateway National Recreational Area has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) that should begin the bidding for a sports complex at Floyd Bennett Field. The mandate of the RFP is that the developer “renovate the exteriors and interiors of two of the existing hangars” to include basketball courts and skating rinks. It is hoped that the historic exterior integrity of the hangars will be preserved. On May 23rd, the National Park Service conducted services to mark the 70th anniversary of Floyd Bennett as the first municipal airport for New York City. When the field opened in 1931, it contained the finest concrete runway available at that time. Plans for completion of preservation work on the Administration/ Control Tower Building were announced at the event.
