350th Anniversary, Huntington and Oyster Bay

As part of the Huntington and Oyster Bay celebrations of their 350th Anniversaries, SPLIA will be mounting two exhibits in 2003. The first, expected to open in late spring of 2003, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire District. The fire department, established in 1852, is fortunate to have preserved a number of significant artifacts relating to its early history. These range from antique hose nozzles, bull horns, leather buckets, hel-mets, belts, certificates of joining, photographs and other objects. Of particular note is the 1852 hand pumper with its inlaid wooden case and original rails, which will be on display. Working with the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department’s anniversary committee, SPLIA is anticipating the loan of articles which may be in private hands, particularly early photographs and paintings of members and equipment, photographs of fires, objects relating to previous anniversary celebrations, letters and diaries describing fire depart-ment life, antique uniforms and the like. Later in the year, SPLIA will exhibit furniture and objects from its own collection, made by craftsmen from the two towns. The exhibit will be curated by Dean Failey, SPLIA Trustee and Long Island furniture authority. Mr Failey is the author of L o n g Island Is My Nation, the Decorative Arts and Craftsmen, 1640 -1830 and is Christie’s Senior Vice President and Senior Director of American Furniture. This will be an opportunity to showcase important recent discoveries and new acquisitions from this rich collection.
