In recognition of SPLIA’s initiative and successful
collaboration with the World Monuments Fund, both organizations
have jointly received the League’s 2003 Excellence in
Historic Preservation Organizational award for the successful
save of the Modernist, Edward Durrell Stone designed,
A. Conger Goodyear House, in Old Westbury. Previously
owned by the New York Institute of Technology and used
as its Presidents House, the land was sold for development
and the house used as a staging area during construction.
Rescued after all utilities had been disconnected and
a demolition permit filed for, SPLIA was successful
first in nominating it to the League’s Seven to Save
list in 2002 and subsequently having it listed on the
WMF World Monuments Watch list. The resulting publicity
attracted funding from the Barnett and Annalee Foundation,
enabling the house to be urchased and buying time for
repairs and maintenance followed by a marketing effort
to find a buyer willing to preserve it consistent with
preservation covenants, to assure that its integrity
will be maintained. This year, the A. Conger Goodyear
House has also been successfully listed on the State
and National Register of Historic Places.
